Yellowfin Tuna
Outer Banks Fishing for Yellowfin Tuna
Offshore fishing for yelllowfin tuna on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is some of the best in the world. The combination of bottom structure on the continental shelf and the gulfstream current and eddies provide year round fishing. Our run to the Gulf Stream is short in comparison with many east coast destinations, averaging 30-45 miles.
Yellowfin tuna are available year round with better catches occurring in October through June.
October through December produces excellent catches and the weather is still pretty mild.
During our winter season the weather is often very unpredictable. Improvement begins by late March.
Spring tuna fishing is great and can continue through June depending on weather conditions.
National Marine Fisheries imposes a catch limit of 3 yellowfin tuna per person in addition to the 27″ fork length we now have. Our fleet has for years had a self imposed limit of 24 tuna and the federal limit will just help insure that everyone abides by the rules.
